I really did not like the film. I had to watch it for a French Lit/Film class and was expecting something much better; it is not a bad film, in fact it is very witty and clever - I just don't get it! It seemed messy - I prefer slow films, and this film had such a fast pace. I loved Le Feu Follet and Les Amants, but Zazie does not appeal. Saying that, I will watch it again at some point - I always do! I'll get back to you if I have a change of heart.

I love this movie. Yes! Catherine Demongeot was so cute at the time!! I really wonder what happen to her since the 60's... that's kinda weird that no one has any bit of information about her...

Carpe Diem.

Demongeot made another picture with Louis Malle just after and then decided to stop it. Since she spent her whole life as a school teacher.

reply

If she really did become a teacher that would be funny, considering why she wanted to be a teacher (in the movie she wanted to stick students in the butt with their compass and make them eat chalk).

To borrow an old phrase from Ebert...
I hated hated HATED this movie!

Lame slapstick cartoon goofiness that felt like an unfunny live action version of gags I'd expect from Bugs Bunny or Tom & Jerry, only they'd be funnier in those cartoons. I really hope the novel was much better than this weird experi-mental 'comedy'. Stephen Chow did his live action Road Runner-esque chase scene bit in Kung Fu Hustle a few years back and at least that was amusing and visually kinda impressive. Having seen other Malle films, I was very disappointed with this one even going into it expecting a lighter comic film.

There are so many foreign films I'd like to see Criterion release, as well as things like more Powell/Pressburger films, that I hope if they do eventually release this film that it's simply thrown into an 'Eclipse Series' boxset of Louis Malle cast-offs so they can spend more time on more worthy titles.

If you're watching 'Fullscreen' DVDs, you aren't getting the whole picture.

I was very disappointed with the movie!
I borrowed it from the library and was expecting an excellent movie and it really wasn't.
I'm not saying it was 'bad', i was just expecting more.
But I think the actress who played Zazie was very talented and sweet!

I find myself in total agreement with you, Death. And now I of off to hit the 1/10 button.

I loved the movie! I had so much fun watching it. I was surprised to see the low ratings here. The film is cute, funny, well edited and shot and quite ground breaking for a movie from 1960. I can understand why some don't like it, you have to appreciate the slapstick humor and the somewhat odd characters and dialogues of this film.

I'm halfway through. It's really enjoyable with beautiful shots and great choreography, e.g.Zazie running in circles through the shopping arcade pursued by the man who bought her moules et frites. The child that played Zazie was incredibly charming.

Why problem make? When you no problem have, you don't want to make ...

Agree with you 100%, probably my most favourite film.

It really helps if you know French (quite fluently) and understand what is going on with the dialogue. The author, Raymond Queneau, makes huge play out of colloquial language, which the film then adopts. In fact, the film follows the book quite closely.

I have the Criterion BluRay, which I can heartily recommend. I also have the book (in French and English). It's interesting to note that the French adore the book, and although 50+ years old, it's in their top 100 books of all time.

Malle did a superb job with something considered "unfilmable", as did Demongeot, Noiret and the rest of the cast.

The movie has other language subtitles.

I liked it for the most part. The food fight got tiring.
