Does anyone know?

There is a movie that my Grandfather told me was filmed on the Buffalo River in Linden, TN. along time ago. Could this be the one? Thanks!

Wild River was filmed closer to Chattnooga, TN around 1959. I beleive Linden is farther west. But you never know I'm sure they moved around the various river in search of ideal locations.

This is a long time to wait for an answer, but if you are still around; There were two movies filmed at the "Natural Bridge" in Wayne Co. TN, but they were NOT on the river, but in the cave that is the Natural Bridge. One of the films was "Tom Dooley" and was filmed in the mid-50s. I was on the site for one day of that filming. It starred Randolph Scott, I believe; anyway I got his autograph but will have to look up my souvenier autog book to be sure of the actors name. ****According to imdb. Michael Landon played Tom Dooly in the film which I wrote about and it was filmed in 1959---The movie that I attending a day of filming for did NOT star ML and it was filmed a couple or more years BEFORE 1959. I graduated from HS in 1957 and left my home town to go away to school that year, so that could NOT have been the film which is listed here. I am positive that the film was about Tom Dooley and that the Kingston Trio sang the theme...but there must have been two differnt movies and one is not listed here.

The other film that was filmed down there I think was named "Natchez Trace" and it was filmed after I had left that area and I have had no luck in finding this film anywhere.

I am unaware of any movie which was shot on the Buffalo River, although a part of the Tom Dooley film may have been.... Would have to go to the Library and look that up.

The odd thing about your story is that Natchez Trace, though its RELEASE DATE is 1960, has a feature story from 1957 about filming at the NATURAL BRIDGE. So maybe it wasn't released for a while. The other thing is, check your autograph, because the star of Natchez Trace is ZACHARY Scott, not Randolph.

Well, we know one thing, it can't be the old Tennessee as that was drown by the Yankee New Deal; but, then again, that was the theme of "Wild River". My grandad use to say that by creating the TVA, "the yankees prevented the hundred year flood by giving us a permanent 10,000 year flood." But of course, Roosevelt's basic plan no matter what he said for public consumption was to throw federal jobs to the northern unions and send electricity to the nothern manufactures.

P.S. I suggest if you are interested in the Tennessee River, you should read Donald Davidson's two-book HISTORY OF THE TENNESSEE RIVER. The opening line of book one is one of the best in the history of American literature. It begans: "Down the valley of the Tennessee runs two rivers..."

this movie was filmed in Bradley County and Polk County TN. The river it was filmed on is the Ocoee River.

It might be one of these two films:

“Walk in the Spring Rain” (1970) with Anthony Quinn and Ingrid Bergman

“I Walk the Line” (1970) with Gregory Peck and Tuesday Weld.

Both were filmed in Tennessee and both involve a Tennessee lawman having personal problems.

I'm not sure why I didn't post here before, considering I read your post about two years ago. I probably didn't want to give out any personally identifying information, and I'm still not going to. :> in any case, I have lived in Cleveland, TN (Bradley County) all of my life. I have relatives who live in the exact area where part of this was filmed, and have been there many times. I don't know where exactly all of the scenes were shot or which ones in particular were used at the location I'm most familiar with, but I can tell you that there's an island in the Hiwassee River near Upper River Rd. in Charleston, TN, and there was a woman who lived on the mainland and operated a ferry (or something to that effect), who did not want to give up her house. I cannot remember if that was in the movie (it's been a long time since I watched it) or if that's only partially what the movie was based on.

in any event, you can see the exact location of said island and ferry (the little white road going to to the river) here: http://maps.google.com/maps?f=q&source=s_q&hl=en&geocode=&; amp; amp; amp; amp; amp; amp; amp; amp; amp;q=upper+river+rd,+charleston,+tn&sll=35.299259,-84.779816& sspn=0.026794,0.05579&g=lower+river+rd,+charleston,+tn&ie=UTF8 &ll=35.246416,-84.714289&spn=0.006703,0.013947&t=k&z=1 7

there is a sign by that house that has "Wild River" written on it if memory serves.
it is a nice place.

update: three months later! I've just recently taken a more keen interest in the geology of my area and have been finding out quite a bit. it would seem that this island might have a name ("Coon Denton Island"), but I am not sure if this site has something incorrect: http://www.topozone.com/map.asp?lon=-84.7138276&lat=35.2453511&amp ; ; ;datum=nad83

I have actually been very near to this island on jet skis in the past without realizing it (I didn't know about it at the time). this is pretty incredible. I will be going back soon--I plan on buying some sort of water craft for the purpose of exploration. it is slightly upstream of two much larger islands in the Hiwassee: Ledford Island, which is apparently a Woodland/Mississippian Indian site of some archaeological importance, and the Hiwassee Island (approx. 400 acres), which probably has similar characteristics, and is also currently the home of a veritable bird sanctuary; I have personally seen hundreds of great blue herons, sandhill cranes, and ospreys there, as well as a couple of bald eagles and their aerie in the vicinity.

there are some photos to be seen of these sites as well as other sites in the general area here: http://ronlowery.com/aerial/galleryaerial.html

I also find a bit more information (and a cite) here: http://tnsos.org/tsla/imagesearch/citation.php?ImageID=24117
