copies out there?

I love this movie; amazed how the young Van Fleet could portray the old woman so convincingly.

I can't find a copy of the video anywhere, however, and I would like to show it in a class (I teach sociology). Does anybody know where to get a print?

Hi Footsperry,
I have been desperately trying to find this movie also in any form. Saw it as a 14 year old and it has haunted me ever since. I believe that we may be dealing with censureship issues. As an adult, will I see this movie now and start "thinking" because of the dialog? Another suppressed movie is "Brotherhood of the Bell" starring Glen Ford and Dabney Coleman. I have a copy, but interestingly all of the books and internet sites ignore it. If you can get a copy of "The Wild River" please let me know. email [email protected]...thanks, John

Just caught Wild River on Fox Movie in all its glory (WS & uninterrupted). Its about time. Excellent.

Another showing 1/31 this time in fullscreen on Fox Movies. It's like watching a different movie altogether. Pan and scan bites!

I am also searching for a copy of this film. My grandmother is from Camden,TN and still lives there. She is a teacher and taught several of the people portrayed in the film. She has wanted to see this again for many years. Any info would be appreciated. You can email me at : [email protected]

Has anybody determined if this movie is being released on video or DVD in the near future? Or if it was ever released on video and might be available on eBay or something? I can't tell how old the previous posts are, the dates don't indicate the year of posting. I'd like to track down a copy for my mom.

My comment was posted November 2003.
So far as I know, the film was never released on VHS - there might be a legal problem about rights on the film.

Yes there are! I saw this film as a college senior in Des Moines, Iowa in 1960 and have been longing to see it again.

After many fruitless searches , I saw it agin today for the first time in 40 years on my own personal DVD!!!

Here is how you get it.( At a rather inflated price). Go on the internet type in www.moviehunter.tv or just call at 866-259-2136. This guy (Duane) can find anything!!!!! He is a real movie nut and like me he fell ijn love with Lee Remick via that film. The movie held up so well and I can see why that 21 year old "me" was so taken with her at that time.

The cosdt? VHS about 39.95 plus S&H ( about $5.00)- dvd will cost about $50.00. Duane old me that this was Kazan's favorite of all his movies.

Happy Viewing!!!!

Thanks for the heads-up. Tell me - is your copy widescreen or "pan and scan"? Was it bootlegged off a TV screening, or is it a produced VHS?

reply

Not being a techno person I don't really know what you mean by pan and scan. We only have a 13 inch TV ( we decided to set an example to our daughters that TV isn't the most important item in our home) and on that screen it was a "cinemescope " like picture. Space above and below the film picture itself.
Where it came from (Bootlegged?) I don't know. Duane, at Moviehunter, is a real nice guy and does most of his business with studios and production units and he will be glad to answer any questions.

I urge you to call him toll free at 888-311-1018 and he can tell you all about it. I did notice a little time lapse between sound and lip movements in a couple of scenes but not so much as to take away from the scenes themselves. This is not Criterion making these DVD's for sure

That being said, I was very pleased with the product. And the movie? Just as good as I remember- Lee Remick is as good and pretty as I remembered. Jo Van Fleet gave a great performance and many supporting roles were done well also.

WILD RIVER will be released on DVD in the near future by Fox. We are currently working on supplemental material for that release. Excellent film, well worth the wait. And, beautifully restored, too. It looks magnificent.

Jo Van Fleet's best performance as well as amazing acting from Lee Remick and Monty Clift. All in all, one of Kazan's best. (And, considering his career, that says a lot).

This is fantastic news! Your July post is very encouraging. Please relay any newer info on release dates, etc. as it will be greatly appreciated by all. Thank you bananabry.

reply

We have no clue why Fox is delaying the release of the DVD. Sorry.

Any update on the status of this release?

Thanks for replying - however
Your technical specs here are beyond what I know. Where might I find it in "Region 2 DVD"? If I have a regular DVD player produced and sold in the USA, does that handle the technical requirements for this DVD?

reply

Wild River is available on DVD in the UK (see play.com, sendit.com, amazon.co.uk) but in order to play it US customers will need a DVD player that is region free.

The U.K. version by Optimum Releasing is great quality. Properly letterboxed with great colour. The material was provided by Fox itself, it wasn't an in house transfer. Hopefully Fox will do a Fox Studio Classics release of this film, but they obviously have a lot more famous films that are more recognisable by the general public, so lesser films like Wild River and Beneath the 12-Mile Reef are yet to be released :-(

I watched it on AMC last week. Even with TIVO (for instant replay), the dialog (especially Carol) is hard to understand -- partly due to sound mixing, but mostly due to the back-woods accents (and I was born and raised in the south). Where's cc when you need it?!

Nevertheless, I really enjoyed the picture.

I have the U.K. region 2 DVD by Optimum releasing. The picture quality is very good, but the sound is problematic. It sounds a bit thin, and the track has hiss, which on occassion makes some things hard to hear. Hopefully the official Fox DVD has superior audio, if so I'll upgrade to that one.

I hope everyone who has an interest in watching this wonderful movie knows it is available for purchase from Amazon.com to either download as a rental or to purchase the DVD.

This is a movie about my heritage as a resident of the Tennessee Valley, on the banks of the Tennessee River.. years before I was born. I cherish the story told about the conflict between the landowners ( or squatters as they may have been) and the progress which the hydroelectric dams brought to the residents of the area.
