Who did the soundtrack?

The music is incredible, it has a nice jazzy feel and fits nicely. Does anyone know who did the soundtrack?

reply

I feel the same way, I love the soundtrack. It's funny thinking this was probably real "wild rebellious" jazzy music back then!

reply

So far I've only found one artist that sounds remotely close to this soundtrack. Is the name Jimmy Bond familiar to anyone here?

reply

it's "cool jazz." it didn't sound anywhere near as "rebellious" as the east coast hard bop that was being produced at the same time, but this kind of "california jazz" was particularly popular with west coast hipsters.

reply

from the sound of the music, howard rumsey, gerry mulligan, and some of their sidemen were probably involved in creating it. it's typical late fifties/early sixties cool jazz of the rumsey/mulligan variety.

reply

it's ironic that you think the music "fits nicely." it's GOOD music, but as far as i am concerned, there was no attempt to synchronize the music track with the action in the film. it seems as if the producer chose some jazz tracks, more or less at random (perhaps outakes from a howard rumsey or gerry mulligan session) and "slapped" them onto the soundtrack without any rhyme or reason. which is probably why the tracks are not credited and no one is listed as the "composer" of the score for the film.

reply

Thanks for info Jon. You have raised some valid points about lack of synchronization and the tracks not being credited. However, I do still think the music is a big part of the overall mystique contained in this film.

reply

the music definitely IS "a big part of the overall mystique contained in the film." the fact that it ISN'T synchronized ADDS to this mystique. at times the music clashes with the action on the screen, calling attention to itself. the music is better than one of those bland, "invisible" scores that the viewer never even notices.

I'm surprised no credits for the music is given. The music is very contemporary for 1960 and makes this movie enjoyable as a time piece.
