Homoerotic Subtext

Did anyone else notice how Jack Nicholson's character seemed to have a gay crush on Dave? Jack never had a girl in the movie and he kept trying to get Dave's girlfriend away from Dave like it mattered on a deep level to him that Dave was starting to step away from Jack's world of dangerous racing. (SPOILERS) Then when Jack turns himself in at the end, it's in reaction to Dave's death. Maybe this movie really was the forerunner for a Brokeback Mountain.

More like a chimpanzee subtext the way Jack's character was the dominant male. That's how chimpanzee society is organized.

Some of Jack Nicholson's dialogue is blatantly that way. Even though it was done in a jokey style.
