WOW!

Out of all the Kurosawa films I've seen(and I've seen them all), this is the very best. I really love all his samurai films and I realize that films like Seven Samurai, Ran and Roshomon get the most credit. But after watching The Bad Sleep Well, I have a new favorite. I had the same feeling I had when I watched Casablanca years ago,...I thought "wow, this movie is everything you could really want in a movie." The suspense was fresh and the plot turned out to be thicker than I thought, but not too thick.

****SPOILER***SPOILER******

Anyway...my only felling, other than amazement, was slight disappointment. I really, really wanted The Boss to catch one in the head at the end. But once I pondered on that thought, I realized that the ending was perfect. I guess I was just inner-twinning other movies being made today. Cause I garauntee that if Scorsese remade this film...The Boss would be a dead man in the end.

While it is not my favorite, I feel The Bad Sleep Well is probably his best film taking place in the modern day. The characters, acting, direction and plot, all flow together smoothly, and as you stated before the plot plays out perfectly.

Not Kurosawa's best in my opinion, but definatly not his worst.

I've also seen his entire filmography now,
(this being the last; just finished)
and it's just amazing.

10/10, no doubts about it.

I haven't seen all of Kurosawa's stuff but this is definitely his best modern day film that I've seen. I would probably rank it third best overall, right behind Throne of Blood and Ran.

From what I've Seen:

Stray Dog: 5/10 -- does not age well, though has its moments
Rashomon: 5/10 -- this is a huge letdown for me compared to his other films
Seven Samurai: 10/10 -- not having seen Ikiru yet, this is where I fell he hit his stride
Throne of Blood 9/10
The Bad Sleep Well 9/10
Yojimbo 10/10
Sanjuro 9/10
Kagemusha 9/10
Ran 10/10

In the Mail: The Hidden Fortress
To Watch: Ikiru, High and Low, Red Beard

jkierste-1, Stray Dog and Rashomon are both 8-10 movies. I can't understand how u give them 5!? U shouldn't watch Drunken Angel. It was made a year before Stray Dog so it's maybe too old for you. II-Xcalate-II, Seven Samurai is overrated but it deserves 10 stars yeah. But I think The Bad Sleep Well is still better :)

By far one of his best.

I also loved how he let the bad guys win. That's always a big + in my book!

For Kurosawa's films set in modern times, I enjoyed High and Low more than The Bad Sleep Well. This film's ending was such a downer, but I acknowledge the fact that the rest of the film is great. Another thing that detracts from my overall enjoyment is Yoshiko. She's such a timid and naive woman, and that makes her an uninteresting character.

If you want a happy ending, that depends, of course, on where you stop your story.
