Why do they call the Echo a ship?

I was told that the definition of a ship was a craft that carried boats. Does a yacht carry boats? Does a dingy qualify the yacht as a ship?

I've been sailing since I was a kid, and I've never heard that definition. Ship is just a generic name for any relatively large vessel.
