I know I saw this as a kid in the 60's, and I was fascinated with it. I always remembered it as a one of the funnest movies and kept planning to see it again. I always loved Mr. Roberts and Ensign Pulver type movie and remembered this as being similar. I was really dissapointed When I finally saw it again 45 or so years later. It just wasn't funny or fun as I remebered except in a couple spots. Then I thought there might have been another movie similar, and finally came to the realization that I was remembering the TV series from a few years later. The ship was much more wacky than this one.

I agree, and while Jack Lemmon is an excellent actor, the supporting cast, especially Ricky Nelson and Warren Berlinger, are simply crap actors.

Having just watched it for the first time, I think the issue is more related to a film title that did not work and music that rarely belonged. It felt like the studio was trying to promote it as a wild comedy without the right material or supporting actors to pull it off. The saving grace of the file was Jack Lemmon being in fine form!
