How did the kids become damned?

It isn't the kids who are "damned", it's the villagers who feel obliged to protect and care for the kids. No religious damnation is involved, of course. The meaning of the word in the film's context is that these poor earth people have been, through alien tampering, burdened with a breed of alien children who must eventually dominate the village and ultimately the world.
