Joseph Wiseman

Hard to believe that "Dr. No" was dusty, ghost-like Abe Kelsey.

If you get a chance to see him in "Detective Story" (1951) you will not believe the over-the-top performance by the young Joseph Wiseman. He was one of the most skilled actors ever. Even if you don't like "Detective Story" you will be blown away by Wiseman.

a truly great performance--this one made me seek out anything I could find with Wiseman. that 'marled eye' and his line reading of 'that old man with his lies...'...creepy

Wiseman was obviously famous for Dr. No, later. But I remember him best as the mob boss that 'Spilotro'/Luca turns against at the last in the almost too true to life, Michael Mann, Crime Story.

'Crime Story'--one of the truly great TV shows of all time (I have the DVD boxes of both seasons). When I began watching it (first-run), as much as I loved Farina, Denison, Santucci, Polito--none of whom I'd seen before--I felt that Wiseman's presence (as an actor and star of some classic films...remember 'Detective Story'?) really anchored the show.
Back to 'Unforgiven'--Wiseman was one creepy old man! I thought his character was almost as if Aaron Edwards--John Wayne's brother in 'The Searchers'--had survived the murder raid on his place, then spent the rest of his life trying to find the girl children that had been taken...

How odd he was the first baddie from the Connery era and yet the last one to die
in real life.

In casting this obviously very talented actor as Dr No, it's clear type-casting wasn't an issue after The Unforgiven. Could there be 2 more unalike roles?
