Anoyone knows about DVD or video of this movie?

I have been trying to find a DVD or videotape of this gem for a long time. If anyone can tell me where to get it (preferable, with English subtitles), I would very appreciate.

I too have been looking, sadly according to this site/link, even around hardcore international film fans, it's pretty rare:

I too am in the states (so a lot of these award-winning/Cannes films simply never made it over here), with any luck, some fan in another country has a DVD they can stream or upload online; there are also subtitle sites where you can try to download SRT subtitles files, if it gets to that point.

But for the time being, I'm not exactly holding my breath, but I am with ya in looking too.

Hi phasmatrope,

It's been a while since I wrote that post and it's nice that someone responded to it, after all this time. Thank you for the link to the interesting forum - I consider myself a 'movie freak' (in a good sense of that word :) so it is always good to know about a movie forum I wasn't aware about.

As a matter of fact, recently I managed to obtain that movie (!!!!), from the Russian site. It has an original French soundtrack and of decent quality, except that the sub file is in Russian. But since I speak Russian, it is on my 'to do' list to translate the subs into English and make the movie available for everyone. I'm planning to start working on it in the middle of July, after I return from my vacation. Since there's an interest by other people in it, I will definitely put it on the top of my priorities list.

So do you also like rare art-house type movies? My 'project' (as a hobby) is to create subtitles for several movies not available for the English speaking public. I'm fluent in Russian and Hebrew and have a large list of excellent Russian movies, as well as some Israeli movies, that I want to wrote subtitles for. Do you speak Spanish or French? I'm currently looking for movie fans, like myself, who speak these languages, to help me in this work. There's no money involved, but the satisfaction of sharing a good movie with other movie fans is enormous!

To conclude this message - I expect to make The Long Absence available towards the end of July (feel free to nudge me if I'll be slow on my promise :-)

PM me if you don't know how to access movies on the Net.

Hi,

I would be very interested in "Une aussi longue absence", watched it at a small art movie theater in Braunschweig, Germany, way back in the seventies.
Also I purchased a Russian copy (no subtitles) from "Dikaya Sobaka Dingo" (The Wild Dog Dingo) with Galina Polskich a few years ago from amazon.com. It was wonderful to watch it again after so many decades, and even without English subtitles I recognized the story (it helped that I watched it when I was 12 with German dubbing).

I saw this film at the Paris-Pullman cinema in London around 1962 when it had a short run.. It was such a brilliant and poignant 'mood' film with virtually no action. I never forgot it and always wanted to know if it was ever available in later formats. Probably in France, unlikely anywhere else.

Hi Malcolm-gliksten, I've seen it in Braunschweig, Germany, sometime in the mid to late 60's when I went to piano lessons and they played it in that same culture center building. I enjoyed it and watched it years later once more on German TV. Unfortunately it's not on TCM.
I checked amazo.fr for you, but they only used to have it on VHS, but even the VHS version is no longer available.
Checked www.ioffer.com, but they neither have it under the English title nor under the French title (Une aussi longue absence).

Will keep my fingers crossed for you that you'll find it. If you do, please let me know. I'm trying to find a copy myself. Thanks!

Cheers,

Chrissie

Hello Tom - and others who are looking for this film,

"Une aussi longue absence" will be made available on DVD by amazon.fr on October 28th of this year. BUT - and here it comes - en francaise only. No English subtitles. However, since we all seem to know this film pretty well and have seen it before, subtitles are not really necessary, are they.
I saw it previously in 1960 in Germany, under the title "Noch nach Jahr und Tag" dubbed into German. Very well, I might add.
And then there's this: Youtube has the entire film on its site. In Italian!

Greetings to all and good luck. Hildegard Brosseau.
