Why on Earth did they have a compass aboard the rocket?

I do now that. I also know that it's pretty much common knowledge that all a compass does is to align itself with the Earth's magnetic field. In space, it would either A) do absolutely nothing b) spin randomly to whatever magnetic influence is strongest.
No need to be condecending, I just wondered what on earth they were thinking when they put a compass in there.
If the writers spent an hour with a professor at the local community college, they could have eliminated dozens of scientific 'goofs' in this movie.
