I've never heard of a remake being discussed, not to say it hasn't. This is one of those movies that was so well done, it's hard for me to see why anybody would want to do a remake. I guess I'd watch it just to see, though the bar has already been set high by which it would be judged.

God forbid.

Agreed - it was a film for the times and I doubt any audience would identify with a remake. Even the Critics would spoil it all, so leave be.

No fan of remakes am I....however, I think this would fit the mould very well. Tunes was very much a movie of its time - although made in 1960, it was set in the immediate post-war era and explored the move for an infantry battalion from being a fighting unit to garrison duty. This fits very well with the modern British Army. After 13 years of constant operations in Iraq and Afghanistan (and, prior to that, 30 years in Northern Ireland), today the British Army has no substantial overseas/war operation afoot. Additionally, there is a national debate going on about the role of the Army and the place the modern soldier holds in 21st Century Britain. Yes, all in all, I think this would make an excellent remake.

I take your point entirely.

However, rather than a remake, am sure an excellent script could be compiled and a film-worthy storyline prepared for the widescreen along similar lines to what you have suggested in above post, Dbloodnok.

reply

ronfirv, equally I take your point - I really don't like remakes!

I have yet to view a remake which outshone the original, unless you can suggest one?

I was at school(primary)when this gem was released but saw it many years later. I was born and educated in Edinburgh, "a garrison town"if ever there was one, and my Dad was ex-Army, so this very much appealed to me. Still does. The funeral preparations scene with Sir Alec had me in tears!
(My late mother knew Sir Alec, years before he was knighted of course, when he acted in plays in Edinburgh. She spoke quite well of him).
