Joe Turkel

Not to be overlooked: Joe Turkel, who gives a convincingly smarmy tone to the character of Nick the blackmailer. Turkel was later featured very creepy roles in two of my favorite movies, as Lloyd the bartender in THE SHINING and as Dr. Eldon Tyrell in BLADE RUNNER. You knew he looked familiar, right?

Well, no, I did not remember him from The Shining and Blade Runner, but he did have just the right tone. Trying to befriend someone while trying to blackmail them, just like a true con artist!

Incidentally, when I first saw his character (when he's talking to the little girl), I thought he was either a) a musician pal of Tom's (what with all the crazy hip lingo) or b) a club owner or musician trying to find Vi, who was a singer herself.

Joe also turned up as the town sheriff a few years later in another Bert I. Gordon film, VILLAGE OF THE GIANTS.

Joe Turkel, who is a lovely gentleman (although he once told me "I never liked you." 😊 ), also appears in an unprecedented three Stanley Kubrick films:

The Killing (1956)
Paths of Glory (1957) and, of course,
The Shining (1980)

as well as two films from the great Sam Fuller:

Fixed Bayonets! (1957)
Verboten! (1959)
