Why does everybody hate Ernst?

Yeah he's whiny and a bit obnoxious, but to not even make the DVD cover? That's harsh!

I think his mom likes him, but that's about it.

In the book the father dislikes the second son, because he's lazy. The laziness didn't translate to the movie, but the dislike sure did. I felt sorry for Ernst and was rooting for him to get the girl.

reply

That was great when Fritz crushed Ernst's straw hat!

reply

Since am in the middle of three brothers I can relate to Ernst. When were little and played this movie i was always compared to Ernst my older brother to fritz and my little brother to francis. So of course my older brother being fritz he would always pick on me during the movie comparing the crushing of Ernst's hat to the crushing of my dreams. OK maybe not that dramatic but i always felt slighted by being compared ernst.

reply

Frankly I liked Ernst because he had a brain and wasn't a stupid jock like Fritz. Also Fritz was so full of himself I thought Roberta was dumb for picking him ~_~ they deserve each other.

reply

I know, I always used to feel so bad for him! I had a big crush on him when I was little.

reply

One reason could be he always acted like a friggen know it all. I would get pretty po'ed at someone who thinks they know everything. Sure, he was smart, but there are times you just need to shut up.

reply

Ernst was pretentious and annoying. He tried to steal everyone's thunder and make himself look like the hero of it all.

I loved his character. I also loved Fritz's character. They were a great match.

Not sure why Ernst isn't on the cover.

reply

I hated the older brother for being so bossy and for stealing the girl.

reply

i love ernst!!! he was my favourite character in the film! <3

i can't believe he wasn't on the dvd cover....that's so mean!!

i put the diamond in the coat.........I PUT THE COAT ON HER! titanic 97

Didn't he pretty much get kicked out of Disney once he came out of the closet? The actor that is, I always felt sorry for Ernst as well. He was book smart where Fritz was street smart etc.

In Ernst' defence, Roberta was leading them both on....

hahaha a thread about ernst. classic

was he brave in the swamp fight with the huge boa? i seem to remember he was?

the pirates were always my favorite, watching the film now with my 9 year old brother (I am 22) they are ridiculous, infact the entire movie is ridiculous. That didnt stop me from watching it many many times

I also love Disney's 20000 leagues under the sea with kurt douglas--classic

reply

I love Ernst! I'd sit and discuss books with him any day! It was about 10 years old when I saw this, and I remember thinking that Tommy Kirk is cute, just as in the other films he was in.

I never saw anything that great in James MacArthur, no matter what role he plays. He's too blah for me. Tommy definitely is the cute one, and he handled drama and comedy quite well.

It's just classic sibling rivalry, brought to the forefront and magnified by the inclusion of an eligible female in the mix just when they are at that hormone-crazed age. Roberta, perhaps intrigued and pleased by all this attention, did (obviously) play both sides against each other to stir up the pot.

I agree with an earlier comment that I think Ernst who is more "book smart" and all about completing tasks using technology (less manual labour, more energy-saving ways) is probably more like a modern day person. And I can see how current audiences might identify with him. Fritz is probably the more classic hands on, sailing, adventuring man-of-action of both that time period and from literature (an archetypal hero, protagonist-type). That type of character might always have an appeal to audiences in general, and even in our modern times be considered more attractive. But this character type(successfully making a living with such a lifestyle) is uncommon these days. Like, who would you bet on for "Most Likely to Succeed" after HS... the class valedictorian, or the popular class athletic star?

Plus, I'd like to point out that Fritz was much more like his Father. Naturally, the Father approved of (if not outright favoured) the eldest son who was much more like himself in spirit, skill set, and temperament.

I think ol' Ernst did ok in the shadow of his big brother and was an appealing character. He tried to and DID contribute the survival of the group. He couldn't help his hormones and instincts which caused the vying for the attention of the one and only eligible female on the island. There was no doubt that he'd lose to the Alpha male IMO.

Believe it or not, it was the THIRD brother that annoyed me the most. Sure, kids will be kids and wander off with curiosity, but geez, you're on an island with dangerous predators, cliffs, quicksand, etc. how about a little more supervision... or self-discipline. Oh, and let's let him casually handle an open flame and what essentially amounts to a big frickin' pile of grenades.

OMG! I watched this again last night on TCM, and I wanted to throw something at Francis! He was BEYOND obnoxious!

Personally, I liked Ernst the best. He was so smart and tried so hard to overcome being the middle child. He seemed sincere in trying to court Roberta as well.

Fritz was an OK character, but I thought he was far more brawn than brains. Fritz didn't annoy me, but nothing really endeared him to me, either. I didn't get what Roberta saw in him, especially when he wanted to stay there rather go off to London, which is obviously where she wanted to be.

In the book there were 4 brothers, and they gave Francis all the most obnoxious qualities of both younger siblings. Even reading the book as a child, before I ever saw the movie (that was in the dark ages when you had to wait for a film to turn up at the theatre in revival) I thought Ernst was annoying....By the time I saw the movie James MacArthur was my first preteen crush so Ernst didnt stand a chance.....

Tommy Kirk was caught buggering a young boy on the set of a John Wayne movie, and John Wayne had him blacklisted in Hollywood. No more Disney movies, only b-grade surfing movies after that, all downhill. The sad thing was, some director or producer probably did it to Tommy when he was young. Hollywood was and is full of pedophiles, with many rumors which many former child actors and actresses have affirmed, but without naming names.

Not quite correct; he was let go from Disney when the studio found out he was gay and having relations with a male teenager after the boys mother complained to Disney. Disney fired him, but then brought him back for THE MONKEY'S UNCLE (they needed the sequel) - but that was it for Disney.

He was fired from Wayne's THE SONS OF KATIE ELDER not because he was gay, (He had already been let go from Disney in 1963, but (per IMDB) "fired from the film after being arrested for possession of marijuana at a party on Christmas Eve 1964. Photographs of him wearing police handcuffs made the front pages of newspapers, and consequently he found it increasingly difficult to get film roles." I don't know of any source to confirm Wayne blacklisted him, and I don't think he did.

reply

He's definitely the Dean Venture to Fritz's Hank.

reply

Fritz always annoyed me. But then, I usuallly prefer the intellectual types, so way to go Ernst!

It most likely goes back to the fact that he was, is gay, Disney didn't like them those days. Some old feud looks like.

I didn't care for Ernst because he was a pretentious, hot-headed weenie.

Roberta had more of an interest in Fritz because he was more pragmatic and charismatic. Roberta never really seeks Ernst out the way she follows Fritz around. Very revealing is the scene where she is "learning" how to shoot from Fritz. Fritz was better at improvising solutions like when they were lost without the compass or dancing with Francis when his father started dancing with Roberta.

Ernst doesn't seem to have any patience for people who are in disagreement with his best way to do something. When he is successful he rubs it in. Like with the rope around the turtle or the bridge for the zebra. Also, he can't think outside of himself. If it were up to him, he would have had all 3 of them scouring the swampy river for the compass that he dropped because the compass is the ONLY WAY to get home. Also, when he doesn't think something is going to work, he is really obnoxious about it - like with catching the tiger or the pirate alarm.

The biggest flaw is that Tommy Kirk who plays Earnst is a bad child actor. He's fine in the Shaggy Dog where he doesn't share the screen, but here is totally upstaged by James McArthur who is 10 times the better actor and much more convincing. If they changed nothing about the roles, just switched the actors, I bet everyone would hate Fritz.

Did their father favor Fritz because Ernst was obnoxious or was Ernst obnoxious because their father favored Fritz?

I still don't understand why Ernst isn't on the dvd cover.
