Deborah Kerr, 1921-2007

Terrific, lovely actress, and THE SUNDOWNERS was one of her very best performances. Rest in peace, and thank you for your talent.

She was great, and she should have won the Oscar for this film.

reply

Yes indeed. Six nominations, and not one win. Liz Taylor, who won for Butterfiled 8 over Miss Kerr in 1960, publicly belittled that Oscar, as basically having been given to her because she had nearly died of pneumonia a few months earlier, and she was right. But at least DK received an honorary AA in 1994.

Finally catching up with this film, and I'm completely charmed by Kerr here - her silent observation of the pretty young woman on the train was heart-rending, and without a word of dialog Kerr got everything her character was feeling across to the viewer.

"In my case, self-absorption is completely justified."

Exactly right. Brilliant actress. She and Mitchum always made a surprisingly compatible couple. Great chemistry, but without seeing them together you wouldn't have thought so.
