Director and cameraman - SPOILER

Director Fred Zinnemann had prior experience as a cameraman. That combination seems to produce very talented movie directors. Directors who already know how an image must be lit and recorded to achieve maximum effect on the big screen are miles ahead of competitors.

The Australian exteriors in The Sundowners are truly beautiful. Watch the fire scenes to get an idea of Zinnemann's talent.

The DVD of this movie is well worth viewing, as it also includes a B/W special feature with voiceover by the novel's author showing movie-making crew, actors, and actresses at work.
