Filmed in Australia...

...& even We can't get a Copy! Unless it's a 2nd-hand ex-Rental Video of it!
They NEVER play it on Free-to-Air Television, anymore...('cause they ain't got a bl**dy DVD copy of it, 'aven't they?!)I'm reading the Book at the moment that has Bob Mitchum & Deb Kerr on the cover...did You know, parts of it were filmed in "Iron Knob", in Sth Australia? I got stuck there, twice, whilst Hitch-hiking to & fro to Western Australia & back...it's Twue! It's TWUE! There IS Buggah awl there!! Only a very amusing Road sign that shows a stick figure of a Man with his hand on his hip & the words: "Iron Knob" at the end of a line that juts out from where a blokes "Daks" would be...it's Classic! Only wish I'd had a Camera at the time & taken a Pic!! So, until they re-release the Movie, I'll just have to be content with "Smily" & "Smily gets a Gun" & "smily goes to Washington"...
Ooh'roo!!

It is available on DVD from Amazon.com The DVD needs to be played on a region free player. It is good to see all the Australian character actors in this film. I love it.

It would have been nice to see some "real" Aussie in the lead roles. There must have been some Aussie born actors around at the time, who could have got a lead role in this movie.

At one stage Australian born Errol Flynn was in the running for the role of Paddy, I think, but he upped and died. During this period the Australian film industry was very much in the doldrums and the country was never likely to produce home grown headlining stars, in an international production, especially once Flynn passed away.🐭

guess what joe, it's on tv right now..channel 9 to be exact

Here's hoping Joe got to see it! I just saw the channel 9 screening you referred to there Christopher, my first viewing of the film, and I think it's a great movie. It is edifying to see the couple stick with, and at times concede to or compromise with, each other despite their differences and difficulties. I gather Zinnemann and his wife were likewise mutually devoted.
