Favorite movie

The Story of Ruth is one of my all time favorite biblical films. It may not be "The Ten Commandments" or "Ben Hur" in epic size, but there is something very endearing about it. I have taped it from television years ago (they do not show it very often) and watch it several times a year.

Just wonder if anyone else feels the same way I do?

1. It has a good score, and I like the main theme. Possibly the "Pay attention, here's an Angel!" announcement was slightly overdone, but it was pretty. Had a hard time keeping "Climb Ev'ry Mountain" out of my head whenever I saw Peggy Wood.

2. "I never confuse gentleness with weakness" is an excellent line.

3. I covet the earrings Ruth has on when she's talking to Mahlon in the gardens. Pardon my shallowness, but those were just beautiful.

4. Apparently I was pre-adolescent the first time I watched this, since THIS time I've observed that we get to see quite a lot of the hindquarters of Mahlon and Boaz. Not that I'm complaining exactly, it just seems a bit startling in a Biblical film.

5. For some reason I was thinking that the little girl who was going to be sacrificed, got away. Didn't much care for that scene, although I suppose it was necessary to drive home the point.

6. Like another poster, I'm also inclined to prefer Tob to Boaz, partly because I like Jeff Morrow, and partly because I found the scene where Boaz forces the Moabite to drink poisoned water (which kills him) kind of upsetting. I know that ultimately he deserved it, but it was still unpleasant to watch.

7. Looking at Jeff Morrow and Elana Eden standing next to each other, you wouldn't think he was slightly more than thirty years older than she was. (Not that it makes any difference, my ex-boyfriend is more than thirty years older than I am.)

8. In the scene where Naomi is talking to the angel at the well, in the upper left corner of the screen, for a second you can see a man walk into the frame. It's very brief, but it looks like he's wearing a red cap and a t-shirt.

9. I thought it was cute when Tob is drunk and dancing, and he's about a foot taller than everybody else. And I've watched too much MST3K, as multiple comments immediately ran through my mind after he cheerfully greets Ruth with the line, "I knew you'd look beautiful in my dress!"

10. I love the look Ruth and Naomi exchange when Tob's rambling on (on what he had hoped to be his wedding day) about how wonderful it is that Ruth's blood will mingle with that of a proud house. The women don't roll their eyes, but the meaning is the same.

11. Those subtitles sure come in handy sometimes. I knew the word was *something* uncomplimentary, but I couldn't make out "wanton" without help.

12. I've seen where some people found Elana Eden's accent distracting, but I liked it. I had no trouble making out what she was saying, and her every word was a constant reminder that she was an outsider, a foreigner. Ruth couldn't just blend with the local populace (not that she could have anyway, being heart-stoppingly beautiful.)

Overall I really enjoyed this movie. I like these good older ones. Kinda nice where the heroine is genuinely shocked at the thought of playing footsie with the hero without being married to him. Guess those days are gone forever.

Great review! Not many people know (or care) about this little movie.
I never tire of it and wish that bibilical epics would return to the big screen (not Passion of the Christ type of violent movies)

Thanks for sharing your views.

Yup. I do indeed. I also have an old VHS copy.

I enjoyed it very much. Just viewed it on Netflix, but I remember seeing it years ago. I remembered the scene when Ruth was rejected for sacrifice because of a blemish which suddenly appeared on her arm.
