just seen it

Was shown on UK Channel 5 today-first time I have heard of /seen this (although aware of subject matter) and was held spellbound by the well played outstanding story- why no VHS/DVD release ?

I caught this this afternoon too. What's puzzling me is that there are only 44 votes and this is the first thread on these boards. For a film looking at the war from the other side it wasn't the slightest bit pro-Nazi. There were hugely talented actors in it, how has this been overlooked?

reply

No idea why it has not been shown often or indeed ever before- the print quality was not good in some parts- maybe this disuaded the schedulers ?

With the discovery of the Sydney and Kormoran, I remembered seeing this film in the cinema as a youth. I couldn't remember the title and it didn't help that the imdb files it under it's Italian title and the plot synopsis is empty. In any case, there is an online source for a DVD of the film that is probably made from a broadcast or similar source:

All the dvd's (dvdr's) I've seen are really poor quality and make this movie painful to watch.

Just saw this movie on Netflix for the first time in maybe 30 years so you might try that. While the quality isn't pristine, it's still pretty good for a movie from it's time.

The film had a rare outing on British TV today. Sadly my DVD recorder only managed to save the first hour, but I wasn't overly impressed. No problems with the stock footage of ships sinking etc, but I was surprised to learn that it was made in 1960; it had the feel of a film produced around 1950.

Mylene Demongeot's sex-kitten inclusion was ridiculous, with her 1960s short shorts, and the vastly overweight Charles Laughton struck an incongruous figure.

Mylene Demongeot's sex-kitten was ridiculous ... but man that was a delicious and tempting ridiculous! That Nazis must have been gay because a straight guy would have quit the party to party with her!!!

The camera work when she was climbing up the rope ladder was startling and totally surprising! I actually did a OMG double take!

As for Charles Laughton ... he was just painful to watch. He really hurt the film!

On he other hand ... I thought Van Heflin was superb in the role of Captain Rogge. His convictions were very believable. Thinking back he was also great in Airport.
