HIGHLY FICTIONALIZED

Amazing ... the message ...

"HOWEVER INCREDIBLE THEY MAY SEEM THE EVENTS NARRATED IN THIS PICTURE ACTUALLY OCCURRED."

Appears on the screen at the start of this 1960 movie. Years later we learn the vast majority of the film was total nonsense. That's kinda odd when you consider that real Captain Bernhard Rogge was a writer of the film.

This is too bad as Bernhard Rogge lived a remarkable life ... before during and after The Atlantis. It should be noted that Atlantis took out 21 ships during WW2 and that Rogge was awarded a ceremonial sword by Japan's Emperor Hirohito.

In the end Van Heflin did a great job of memorializing this remarkable man.
