Classy Dana Wynter

If only the film industry turned out more actresses like Dana Wynter. She's beautiful and dignified yet approachable. Unfortunately, "ladies" are no longer in fashion, but the 60s sure had them: Audrey Hepburn, Eva Marie Saint, Deborah Kerr, to name a few. Nicole Kidman seems to be only one carrying that sputtering torch today.

Yes on Dana Wynter. She was all about class and quality. While I can't say that the epic story of the hunt for the Bismark would have been diminished by her absence -- it's far too big a tale -- she brought great dignity and charm to her personification of the highly capable and dedicated WRENs of WW2. A great choice to play across from the superb Kenneth More.

As for the equally classy Kristin Scott-Thomas, I've thought since first seeing "The English Patient" that were "Ice Cold In Alex" to be remade, she would be perfect for the Sylvia Syms role (the beautiful, tough, competent and 100% indestructible Nurse Murdoch).

She would be a marvelous choice for Ice Cold in Alex, but surely this film should never be remade...
I've seen things you people wouldn't believe...

I just watched the film and have to agree...Dana is oozing class and femininity.

Women in general today (at least in the west) have lost their ladylike qualities...but then again do us men exhibit the class of the gentlemen in this film either?

EXACTLY...WHO in the movies/tv exudes the essence of a Gregory Peck or a Cary Grant? They just ain't there anymore...Maybe in British Movies & TV they are...I liked Ioanne Griffud as Horatio Hornblower for example as a young man still steeped in the tradition of acting 'The Officer & A Gentleman'

Then she's probably German - Huns is a poor nickname that actually comes from an Altai-Turkic people who fought the Romans two millenia ago.

Also, being born in Germany doesn't mean she's German...of course if she's English by blood she's be Germanic anyway but that's a different if related thing.

Who gives a damn what Hitler considered?...he was an idiot who ruined a proud nation. The English and Germans are cousins linguistically, culturally and ethnically...as are the Dutch, Danes, Norweigans and Swedes. Race doesn't really exist as most people define it - culture and tribe does though - that's very real.

Semantics but I agree!

Germans were actually excellent Christians, following a long tradition of Jew hae and Jew murder that goes right back to the early days of the church. Hitler wrote several times that he felt he was doing god's work by going against the Jews. Christianity is by definition anti-Jewish...some people leave that as theological only but others prefer to make it political...and that's when people start dying.

You are anti-Judaism if you are a Christian - Jesus was a Jew who never preached a new religion or asked non-Jews to join. I suggest studying the origins of your beliefs from the people who invented it rather than from Christian literature (and the Christian bible is different), you may be surprised.

Judaism doesn't require anyone to convert in order to be deemed righteous. That's why it's a small, tribal religion. One that has been copied and changed to suit the needs of people who wanted to exert control over others (like Paul and later Muhammed).

A lot of Jews have died for not wanting to accept outsiders telling them their faith is wrong.

Anyway this isn't an issue for me...I am a gentile atheist hehe.

" the Germans have a proven history of picking psychopaths for rulers and then following those insane rulers over a cliff to destruction".

Picked who else apart from Hitler? The Kaiser? He wasn't picked. He succeeded to the throne.

How many times has Germany gone over a cliff of destruction? Only twice, and made a remarkable recovery both times.

Sid-Blitzen,

I agree, aside from one Kaiser, Hitler and some of the self-hating Leftists of recent years Germany has had pretty damn good leaders and a track record of achievement and advancement in art, science, literature and politics.

If I wasn't English I'd probably be German or a Han Chinese. I have a lot of time for educated Germans who know their history properly. The best man at my wedding was German.

It's a shame of course what happened to our allies and cousins - Nazi Germany didn't happen in a vacuum. A bigger shame was not teaming up to go after Stalin as soon as the Nazi's fell - a lot of seasoned Germans would have been up for Russia round two I'm sure.

Not at all a Hun. Dana Wynter was born as Dagmar Winter in Berlin, Germany, the daughter of Dr. Peter Wynter (née Winter), a noted British surgeon, and his wife, Jutta Oarda, a native of Hungary. She grew up in England.

How on earth has a thread about a beautiful actress, recently deceased, become hijacked by lots of ignorant arguing about race?

From her bio page, here are two personal quotes:

"In my opinion, there aren't as many originals today. Everyone looks the same to me. Where are the Katharine Hepburns, Spencer Tracys, Clark Gables and Bette Davises of today? Those actors were instantly recognizable. Nowadays I have trouble separating one actor from another."

"There seems to be a wide-spread concern among women that they dare not have a line or crease in their face. If they do, they run to the plastic surgeon and their faces wind up looking like dinner plates...Life is an adventure, and time brings change. But women are terrified of aging for some reason. Everyone clings to blonde hair and white teeth. I think that undermines womanhood."

Every time I see the film I end up thinking Kenneth More's character is going to be a lucky man.
