whatever people say i am, thats what i'm not

I heard the arctic monkeys album title was based on such a line in this film. I personally haven't seen it but i was wondering if someone could tell me about this line. Is it an important line in the film?...... etc

It's used in Arthur's voiceover when he's inspecting his bruises from the fight with the two soldiers.

reply

I must have seen a different version then.

reply

God, Artic Monkeys are so lame

reply

whats wrong with you the arctic monkeys are the best band ever. if you saw them live it would be the highlight of your life

reply

Well s/he's entitled to his/her opinion, though I do disagree with it. Anyway tis irrelevant. The line is not important to plot, but I guess it sums up Arthur, in that he wants to be different and surprise people, and feel that no one knows him properly, hence 'Whatever people say I am, that's what I'm not'

Oh, why do I have to be Mr. Pink?

reply

I agree, I love the arctic monkeys with a passion, alex turner is my life, and anyone who says they suck is an idiot in my book
But yea I want to see this movie really badly, it looks so good what's it about exactly?

reply

its about arthur seaton, a young rebellious working-class lad who has more money than sense and spends most of his time criticising the 'old people' and drinking heavily. He has an affair with a married woman who gets pregnant and also starts dating a young upper-class girl. The second half of the film sees him have to 'sort out' the unwanted pregnancy, choose which woman he wants to be with and trying to have a good time in the face of being constantly ground down by working class life.
One of the best films you will ever see!

I hate Artic Monkeys by the way. I'm fully aware this has precious little to the discussion of the awesome SNaSM, but I just wanted to add to this little soirée.

reply

Yeah well Arctic Monkeys used this line from the film cos THEY want to be different and surprise people, and feel that they feel like no one knows them properly apart from their songs ans stuff.

Don't Believe the Hype.

reply

Maybe, maybe they also just like the movie a lot.. depends which way all you biased fools swing.

reply

i love artic monkeys and the line is not important in the movie but it is one of the best lines i have ever heard

reply

i think arctic monkeys are alright but in no way are they the best band ever. people who think that probably haven't heard much music to be fair so you can't blame them. haven't actually seen this film yet though i've read the novel and it was amazing. i hope it lives up to the book.

reply

I think the line is important. Just because it is understated doesn't mean it is of little importance. It's used in quite a vicious little monologue, and I think if you haven't seen the film you should go out of your way to.

And I'll take middle ground here by saying that Arctic Monkeys are okay, if overated in my humble opinion. Not really doing anything that wasn't done 20 years ago, as their video to I Bet That You Look Good On The Dancefloor shows, being shot in a vintage style. Plus, Morrissey quoted this film in his tunes before they did....not that that means anything really.

Albert Finney = absolute legend.

reply

Jeez, how you have been proved so wrong as time has shown...

I think now it's safe to say that they are probably one of, if not, the greatest band that's still together.

this film is awesome and the line is at the beginnin in the raleigh factory NOT after the fight

arctic monkeys are over rated NFT

reply

Wrong. The first person is correct. It's after the fight. you better go watch the movie again. Maybe your thinking of the classic line: "What I'm out for is a good time. All the rest is propaganda."

The line goes to show that he's delusional from the truth. He pretends to be innocent when really he's a moral less person who lies and deceives people.

Hi Razzatron,
Here is a youtube link to the scene from the film.

I would say the character, Arthur Seaton, is not delusional. The line comes toward the end of the film. It's not important in the sense that you could lose the line and still have a great film and a sense of the character, but it's interesting in that it helps summarize, in a way, how the character views himself. Watch the clip and see what you think.

In the pervious post I said that Arthur was delusional to the truth because he won't admit what he's done. The old women constantly tells him that she knows what he's up to with Brenda but he denys it. Everything Arthur does he believes that he's right and that everyone else is wrong. The truth is that he was wrong and he deserved the beating the soldiers gave him.

I just knew there'd be a thread with this title. I saw the film not knowing where the Arctic Monkeys got their album title from, so imagine my surprise when it popped out during the movie!!! One of the top ten albums of the '00s.

reply

That is correct. They were greatly influenced by this movie. It is also noted in the Trivia section for the movie here on IMDB.
