Magic jug

One thing that always puzzled me in ALAKHAZAM THE GREAT was in the part where Alakhazam takes on the McSnarl Bros. Herman and Vermin, and kicks their respective asses, they entrap him in some kind of magic gourd. What exactly was that gross-looking stuff that Alakhazam falls into at the bottom of the jug before he finds a way out, and what might it have done to him if he hadn't escaped?

I've never seen the movie, but in the original story, the gourd was filled with a liquid that could dissolve anything it touched. So basically, it would have melted him if he touched the liquid.

Trivia comment: I don't know if this was an intentional in-joke or not, but the names "Herman and Verman" appear in the "Penrod" books by Booth Tarkington. These are turn-of-the-century stories with a great tongue-in-cheek humor about an imaginative boy in a small town. Sort of Tom Sawyer meets Our Gang. Anyway, Herman and Verman were two black boys, brothers who were playmates of the main characters, Penrod & Sam.

Going back to the last message but one, I do remember that he did initially touch the liquid but managed to shake it off, however some of it clung to his tunic, and started to eat away at it. So I guess it would have eventually have done the same to him if he hadn't got out. Incidentally, after he escapes the jug (by piercing a hole and transforming himself into a moth thus enabling himself to crawl through it), notice his tunic is whole and in one piece again? Or could he have simply restored it with his magic?
