The current DVD print is awful

I wish Criterion or another higher quality company would clean this up. The version I watched from Image was a dark and sometimes blurry mess.

yeah, but better than nothing

You people are nuts! There was nothing wrong with the print. You should see the prints we silent film lovers have to put up with. This was perfect in comparison!

The only thing I thought off was the editing. Was it originally created to be that way, those sudden scene changes without any fading to black? It seemed very choppy. I couldn't quite tell if it was designed to be that way by the director or if it was the dual-layer disc (on the back of the label it says that some players might skip and jump trying to read dual-layer discs).

What? Japanese DVDs are usually the best around. Which is why you have to pay through the nose for them. Perhaps you meant Chinese?

I can't understand why Criterion released Armageddon and haven't released this. The dvd version I own is just terrible.

Well they probably released Armageddon to make some money and be able to release other, better films. Criterion can't release everything (I know, it's unfortunate) and there are so many good films they can/want/will release, maybe Rocco will be one of them in the future. Not that they need to, as the Eureka Masters of Cinema DVD is perfect anyway.
