Gay Subtext listed as keywords on imdb. Where and when?

OK, potential spoiler alert.

Gay Subtext - really? When was that and how did they imply it?

reply

Being gay myself, I'd like to know this too. :) Haven't seen the film yet, but that made me more interested in seeing it. :)

I saw the movie last night, and I'm not convinced that there is any. If anything, it's the way that Italian men are with each other, very affectionate and physical and, shall we say, totally unembarrassed. (I've always found this very appealing about the Italian culture, their demonstrativeness.) And I suppose there are a few people out there who might find boxing a bit homoerotic, but I am really straining now. (Wrestling, yes. Boxing, no.) Nope, just don't think it's there.

It's a very good movie at any rate. At almost three hours, it's long, but you never feel it. And the young men are all gorgeous to look at. (Maybe THAT'S what prompted the "gay subtext" mention on IMDB?)

reply

Did you folks really see this film? It is so obvious that Simone was with the guy who takes him home (and they exhange few punches) to get money exhange for sex.

reply

Yeah, it's pretty hard to miss Simone having sex with that guy for money. I guess you can argue whether that counts as "gay subtext", though.

reply

Well, I guess one gay character in the movie entitled the "subtext" in this case.

The collection of short stories about the rough suburbs of Milan and the young men there, this is listed in the credits as a source for the movie. In the written stories there is overt homosexuality, blackmail and such that can and was only hinted at in the movie. The boxing promoter sexually uses his fighters - that much came through.

reply

Simone's relationship with the one guy at the boxing ring (forget if he was a manager or another fighter) seems explicitly sexual. Besides the "taking him home" scene already mentioned (which could be open to interpretation), there's also a moment where he ogles Simone and another boxer naked in the shower.

"I've never seen anyone look so *beep* ugly with just one head!"

reply

Maybe he was not ogling, but rather how well-built his rivals were, anyone of them could easily beat him on the ring.

reply

Maybe it's just a cue that Alain Delon is gorgeous so heads up to both men and women :)

reply

He was very gorgeous indeed. Is there any french male actor these days who oozes with charisma and sex appeal the way he did or still does?
