I love this movie!

And for all the reasons tim mentioned above. Debbie and Tony have nice chemistry together - a believable romance. The character actors are perfect. And yes, the early-60s New York mood is excellent. This is one of those movies you wish you lived in.

It seems few people know about this film, which is a shame. A hidden gem!

I second that. It's a very good movie and Curtis and Reynolds are great together.

After years of wanting a good recording of this film, TCM finally showed it on 3/12/08 and I made a recording of it. It wasn't perfect, but it was better than the old AMC tape (VHS) I made about twenty years ago.

I can still look forward to an HD-DVD of it in the future.

Could you even imagine what this movie would be like if remade today? Full of nudity, sex, drugs, foul language, violence, blood, gore, etc. WHY?
Why change a good movie?

I just finished watching this myself. I hadn't seen it since THE 4:30 MOVIE here in the east over thrity years ago. It was wonderful! This along with LOVE WITH THE PROPER STRANGER is one of those late 50's-early 60's "New York" movies that made me want to live there.
Both Curtis and Reynolds subdued their star personalities and gave real, true, thoughtful performances. And the Elmer Bernstein score was beautiful, especially at the end with that tender, sexy love scene bewteen the two leads.
And did you notice early in the film when Curtis was walking down 42nd Street there was a movie marquee in the background displaying SOME LIKE IT HOT?
Long live the Kennedy-era 1960's!

reply

Oh I missed the Some Like it hot.....

I will make a point to catch it next time.

Don't know about the Kennedy era but the movies were sure better then.

There's plenty of romantic comedies made today. This could be one of those, with the seedier elements processed out.

This movie is about all those things you mentioned. If the producers could have shown it in circa 1960's instead of alluding to it, they would have. But make no mistake, that is what this movie is about.

Yeah, this is a great movie; I never get tired of it. At the end, you just hope that since these two have found each other that their luck will change! There just aren't any actors today that are as hot as Tony Curtis -- so very handsome.

reply

It's an entertaining little romp, but if you think about it, Tony has really made a bad deal for the sake of love/lust. He's been shown to be industrious and she's been basically swindling people for her entire life. Not a great deal for him!

Don Rickles impressed me in a non comedic role,...Mr. Warmth.
