The sets are great as this series is a retro-modern spin on the early years of Norman Bates. So when Norman and his mother Norma (Vera Farmiga) take ownership of the dilapidated motel and house on the hill, you get a sense of how Norman's issues develop as a young man in high school. This all takes place in current times so they can use modern vehicles and cell-phones.

There are several seasons of the show so start at the beginning. I'm still watching it currently in season 3. There are a host of new characters including Norman's brother and "uncle" (I won't spoil that!) along with many new victims. Enjoy.

There was a big fan of Bates Motel who posted here a few times through the last season.... that's who you need to hear from! At any rate, I haven't watched the show but will do so eventually since it's clear from the little bits I *have* seen and from the articles I've read about it that Bates Motel is a high-quality piece of work. It has terrific actors (anchored by Vera Farmiga) and quality writers and producers with pedigrees back though Breaking Bad and the X-files. I don't think anyone rates it as the very best show on TV, but almost all critics have had each of its seasons in the top 20 of the year each time. That's a real achievement in a time of peak TV where there are literally hundreds of shows out there. And, of course, the fact that show has been successful and acclaimed enough so that the showrunners are getting to complete the series' whole arc in exactly the way they want is a *great* sign. Lots of good shows get forced to speed up or terminate early as they fail to find and keep a large enough audience (and there's really nothing worse for an audience than to get a couple of seasons into a show and have it get cut short or mutilated). Anyone who starts watching Bates Motel now knows that it's going to run to completion in style - your viewing investment won't be wasted!

I liked it better after all the drug trafficking nonsense passed. The storylines of Norma and the rest of the supporting characters were more important. Personally I think the writers explaination of Norman was bs. It's one thing to have problems with blackouts, but exactly why did he become obsessed with his mother? Nothing about Norma showed that she had a strict negative view of women so where did this whole "women are whores" idea even come from? And why does he run around calling her "mother" when she didn't even demand him to act that way? When I watch psycho, I see a Norman Bates who is socially awkward around women due to lack of socialization. I also assume he was home schooled by her explaining why he and his mother were the center of the universe in his eyes. I feel like the Norman just came off as a untalented, annoying, clingy and mildly retarded in a sense that he had no actual talent. Psycho 2, you learn that Norman could play the piano because he was taught by mother, it shows me that he's more educated then he comes off as but he's just a bit socially awkward but for the show, it shows none of that. While the show has him obsessing over taxidermy, they try too hard to portray him as just weird.
