Doesn't live up to the hype

I had never heard of this movie, until it showed up in the TCM listings this week. I generally look for reviews before deciding to spend my time watching. The reviews came with a bunch of mystique, mainly because the film had been out of circulation for close to 60 years. A lot of censorship controversy at it's time of original release. So I decided to watch it.

I found it an average film. The scene in question with the censors I suppose, was the potential rape at knife point. But the guy backs away, and nothing happens. The lady in the film is not that attractive. I know she was around 30, but looks older. It may have been more interesting to have someone younger. That she's married to someone much older with money, and appears to have been around the block a few times, makes her less sympathetic.

The plot and appearance of the film, reminded me of a typical episode from the old Alfred Hitchcock TV series. Which isn't a bad thing, but certainly nothing controversial or ground breaking.

When I see a film like 1962's Lolita, or 1972's Last House on the Left, I understood why they were controversial at the time. I didn't feel this way with Private Property.
