I respectfully disagree. I just saw this for the first time in my life, (that I remember anyway because I am 70 so maybe saw it when I was 18-20 or so) and was pleasantly surprised at how good it is. I thought the development of tension was excellent and the acting was done really well..especially for a film that borders on being a B-Western. I am surprised that this had not been brought out on dvd a long time ago. I have been wanting to see it for several years. I recommend it. But this, to a great extent, is a drama, not a shoot'em-up-action-western in the traditional sense. So, I finally paid a premium and got a dvd from Warner Archive Collection. I recommend this film but I am not saying you should spend $20 plus postage.

I think the OP didn't really watch it properly. It's a skillfully woven allegorical comment on the contemporary issues of generational conflict in the rock n roll era. A sort of Rebel without a Cause in the western genre. It has a gritty realism about it as well. Chandler was, along with Randolph Scott, the king of the B Movie westerns, but this feels like a superior product, one of his better vehicles. Tragic that he should die of leukaemia a year after this was made.
