Tom's pocket watch?

What's the significance of Tom's pocket watch to the plot?

The watch appears twice in the movie: In the first scene Tom takes it out and looks at it and says something about how much time has passed, I'm not sure exactly what he was timing. Then on the boat he takes it out when Philippe suggests the poker game; it is Tom's stake in the game. It is revealed at that point that it is a watch that Tom has been given by Philippe's father. There is a brilliant closeup of it as we hear it apparently ringing, like the sound of a distant bell tower.

Just another accoutrement of the rich to show the difference between the two characters because not only was it the elder Greenleaf's watch(the other character obviously didn't inherit such a watch from HIS father) but it is a VERY expensive watch, not because it's gold but because of the complicated function. It's either a minute repeater or a petite/grande sonnerie--or chiming--watch which even then would've cost as much as a car.

Does anyone know the brand/manufacturer of this masterpiece? Must be Swiss.
