Why so overlooked?

This is my 2nd favorite Godard film. (although I certainly haven't seen everything he's made) It is beautifuly shot, different, and poses many interesting moral questions in an intriging way. I actually felt this to be a somewhat more acsessible Godard film, and very enjoyable filmatically, intellectually and emotionaly. Amd yet I never see it mentioned anywhere; it seems to be an overlooked piece. Is there anyone who didn't like this film, and would like to explain to my why they disliked it, or offer insite into why it is rather ignored?

i was thinking the exact same thing....it is a very beautifully shot film(the cinematography is amazing and the script is quite coherent comparing to other films completely INCOHERENT dialogues:P)...the actors are all at their best and generally its stuck on u for quite a long time..to be honest i liked it much much more from PIERROT LE FOU and of cource Une femme est une femme which i found uterly boring(contrary to the wonderfull "Le mempris"which i adored that had more or less the same topic..)...it is a shame its so underated...

I really loved this movie, I think Godard proved himself to be a master of film with this movie more so than Breathless. I think it might have been overlooked because of its theme: the algerian war. Many people might not have been ready to see the truth.

It is a very accessible film - if you watch it twice back-to-back. Godard's pacing is so fast, you miss a lot of the nuances upon first viewing. However, the movie is pieced together almost flawlessly (in spite of having long-winded monologues). I don't think it's overlooked so much as overshadowed by some of his other movies: "Breathless", "Band Of Outsiders", Alphaville, Week-End, etc. This one is in place with other overlooked works, such as "Contempt" and Les Carabiniers.

I agree with the O.P. This is a great film which seems to get very little love from Godardites.

I'll agree that it gets very little love. While I love Godard and have seen almost all of his films and own many, I just did not care for this one. I'd go into more detail if I could but I just really disliked it. Probably because I was comparing it too much to his other great works.

Amazing film. One of the favorites of his 1st era.

Yeah, only his second movie out of 8 I`ve seen that`s pretty much an allaround success. Even the otherwise desperately uninspired JLG had his days.
