The original, the classic!

To me, this is the official Peter Pan movie. While I enjoyed the new rendition which is out in theatres now, I still have to look back on what was my first Peter Pan experience. This wonderfully talented woman brought Peter Pan to life for me. This is the ultimate Peter Pan film!

Yep.
The story of Peter Pan is one of my most favorite stories ever. I grew up with Mary Martin and the Disney Masterpiece, and I really enjoyed the new movie. Not as much as the originals, though. ^_^

IMDb listed this from 1960, when it was actually in 1955. March 7 to be more exact.

This was also the first version of Peter Pan that I saw. I love them all equally, but this one does have special memories for me. To this day, I still put sheets over my head and pretend to be Hook's mysterious lady!

This is the 1960 re-staging of the 1955 program.

The 1955 version was done live on TV twice (in 1955 and 1956) and now exists only in black-and-white kinescope. Videotape did not exist then. All of the children are different, and Wendy and her daughter are played by Kathy Nolan. Liza the maid is played by Mary Martin's own daughter, Heller Halliday. The 1955 version played on Broadway in 1954, and it was produced on television as part of an anthology series of plays and music called "Producers' Showcase", with the entire original Broadway cast.

The 1960 version was produced as a Christmas season TV special, and uses almost all of the 1955 adult cast, but none of the original children. Maureen Bailey plays Wendy and her daughter in this one, and Jacqueline Mayro plays Liza. This version was videotaped in color, and the color tape still exists and is the tape that was issued on VHS and DVD.

The three versions (1955, 1956 and 1960) are literally identical in some ways; they use the same sets and costumes, the same songs, the same script, the same orchestrations, and the same choreography. Mary Martin, Cyril Ritchard, Margalo Gillmore, Sondra Lee, Joe E. Marks and many of the other adults played their roles in all three versions.

Amen. When I think of Peter Pan, I totally think of this one too. I've grown up with this movie. Mary Martin was pure genius. I can't see anyone else being Peter Pan more sucessfully. This will always be my favorite version.

This had to be the most God-awful piece of garbage I have ever seen in my life. Its a lame play but made into a movie. Also, the chick who plays Peter Pan is very nauseating.

reply

Screw you lldegan. What kind of a sentence is "Its a lame play but made into a movie" anyway? You must have no imagination at all. Mary Martin was the best Peter Pan ever.

lldegan "say's": I expect to see a real movie when I put a video on.

So I suppose that Chicago, The Phantom of the Opera, and the multitude of musical film adaptations - real movies - that have been released in the past few years don't interest you. I gather we won't be seeing you at the theatres to watch The Producers when it is released. I'm sure you don't realize what new audiences are being brought to musical theatre thanks to the movies. That's ok. Enjoy your iPod and the opportunity to see live theatre!

All I can say is that this is the only version of Peter Pan I ever saw...and while it's certainly been more than a few years since I last saw it, I think I can honestly say that it's one of the best movies that's been made, certainly one of the better versions.

I'm a little late to this thread, but I have to agree with most everyone, this is definitely my favorite version of the story. It is the one I grew up with, although most people my age grew up with the Disney version. I have so many fond memories of watching this!
