Hook and Mr. Darling are always the same person. Is there a reason behind this?

There was never a rational for it as far as JM Barrie was concerned; it was to give the original actor cast as Hook (Gerald deMaurier) more stage time. Of course, he had a lot more stage time than anyone would ever realize; some of the scene changes took up to 15 minutes and deMaurier would stand in front of the curtain and do impressions while the set was changed!!
