Wow, what a rip for a movie that wasn't very good. Wonder why so much. For cameo appearances by many stars, It's a Mad Mad Mad Mad World far outshines this hodge podge.

I saw this movie as a kid with my Mother and I remember, as we were coming out of it, my Mother huffing that the Americans made the Latinos look like idiots, whereas I loved the movie at the time and didn't really understand what she meant.
You must know that at the time Mario Moreno "Cantinflas" was a huge star to the Latin Americans and If I remember correctly he did always play a similar goofy character. Now you can hardly say that based on one character in a movie that he was representing all Latinos, but now after viewing it again almost 40 years later, I feel that I must agree with my Mother. This movie is such an egregious example of Hollywood "paternalistic colonialism" in which Pepe is made to look like a well meaning but dimwitted, almost childlike Mexican, who constantly gets in people's way and needs everything explained to him more than once in childlike language in order for him to get it right, which he usually doesn't anyway, leaving him to scratch his head in total befuddlement. On top of that he is totally neutered and made to react crestfallen or oblivious to rudeness from others (most Latinos I know are hardly sexual eunuchs, would certainly stand up for themselves if insulted and don't have any more or any less dimwitted people amongst themselves than any other population group). A case could be made that Cantinflas had a hand in allowing himself to be portrayed in such a manner, but maybe he was blinded by the Hollywood star wattage surrounding him and he was feeling only too grateful to be allowed in their presence in a movie with him as it's central character. The only good thing about this movie is the title song, which was one of my favorite movie theme songs as a child, even so on second listen the lyrics are painfully patronizing.

get over it. not every comdedy character is a drag down for the whole latino population. Does Abbot and Costello mean we Americans are all idiots? Does Laurel and Hardy mean all English are idiots. Get over it. Mario knew what he was doing. He became the most wealthy and famous Latino in history.

I don't think you fully understand mario Moreno's character as Cantinflas. He was a very intelligent person and made a fortune, so much so that I believe he was one of the highest paid stars of all time. He lived in a mansion and was very happy. His character was no more stupid than Laurel & Hardy, Charlie Chaplin, the 3 Stooges or Abbott & Costello. Cantinflas was a character not a person and I don't he made latinos look any more stupid than Anglo Americans looked stupid because of the characters they portrayed.

I think, tdoa, that you and others are looking at this film through a racist lens. I was 10 years old when this movie was released, I remember seeing it AND remember the reactions of the adults around me. At no time, did ANYONE, in my hearing, demean or denigrate Mario - or his character, Catinflas. He was beloved by all for the brilliant comedian he was.

I loved "Pepe," and have been dying to see it again since 1961. It was a fun, fun-filled film with no political statement, no boring rhetoric of how we're putting down the ENTIRE LATINO WORLD. It was F - U - N!!!

As others in the thread have said, get over it. Try watching this movie with no pre-judgments, no assumptions.

Take a look at how many nominations this film garnered and then see if you can apply the race card to it.

I Concur! Just like Jacque Tati, Charlie Chaplin, Peter Sellers Mantan Moreland et al, Cantinflas was a GREAT comedic actor!! This was the type of part he played in most all of his movies. He was VERY successtul playing the stumbling/bumbling Latino role. He was rich and lived a long life. What more is there to say? No racism was ever intended! He was one of the best at his trade!

I remember the movie, probably at the drive in, and had the Golden Book. I still remember the theme tune. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fq_eyJ4ozHo

Michael Todd and Elizabeth Taylor were married at Cantiflas' home in Mexico City.

But most people in Mexico are like that. Wish I was kidding.

Guess there really are people who act worse than 12 year olds.
