I was almost certain the man in the paper shop was Alfred Hitchcock

He is the absolute spitting image of him

It was Miles Malleson. But he can look like Hitch

Did they deliberately cast an actor who resembled Hitchcock?

reply

I don't see any reason why they should have done.

Miles had appeared in Powell movies since 1933 so they would have known each other quite well. Miles was best known for playing vicars, like in The Importance of Being Earnest (1952) or other respectable characters. So it was a bit of a joke to see him buying some "views"

Powell did Hitchcok a one-upsmanship trick. He appeared as the psycho's father, and his was the psycho as a child. What ever happened to Columba Powell, Powell's son? He's interviewed in the documentary but you never find out anything about HIM!!!

Powell often appeared in his own films. Not as a "director cameo" like Hitch, but just to fill in when they had a brief role that needed to be done and they didn't have an actor to spare to do it.

He was an actor in quite a few of the early films he worked on and later in some of the ones he directed. Check his credits as an Actor

The documentary tells you quite a bit about Columba. The film didn't scar him for life

I have a number of films with that actor in them. Now you come to mention it, Miles Malleson does look very much like Hitchcock. Also look out for the butler as a Hitchcock lookalike actor in Hitchcock's 'Jamaica Inn.'
