Men grabbing women

What is with that? Most of the guys are grabbing the women by the arms and dragging them around. Just noticed that in a scene from L'Eclisse too when Piero meets his old girlfriend. Was this a common European thing at the time? Seems aggressive and bullying IMO. Do French or Italian women still put up with that?
