ONE FOOT IN HELL ON DVD IN SPAIN

One Foot In Hell has now been issued on DVD in Spain under the title Un Pie En El Infierno. It's a good DVD with excellent picture quality and a good English-language soundtrack. Spain of course is in Region 2 so people in Region 1 will need a multi-region DVD player.

I've just bought a copy online. The description says it's a 2.35:1 CinemaScope transfer, which is just what I want. I haven't seen anything but pan and scan versions on television since I went to see the film in its original aspect ratio at the cinema nearly fifty years ago when I was 14. Why Fox are releasing a lot of their old CinemaScope pictures in Spain and not in the UK or US is anybody's guess. Kinda strange if you ask me.

UPDATE: My DVD of One Foot In Hell arrived today and it's an excellent CinemaScope 2.35:1 transfer, enhanced for 16 x 9 televisions and monitors. Highly Recommended. Look for it on amazon uk or eBay uk.

I've never understood either why Fox has released some of its films in Spain but not the US or UK. I have Spanish DVDs of a couple of Fox films which were otherwise unavailable in the States, Woman's World and Night People, and they are of excellent quality -- perfect picture, color, sound, and widescreen. (Night People has since come out on the Fox Cinema Archives line in the States -- but not widescreen!) I also have a great Spanish DVD of the 1954 Paramount film Secret of the Incas.

On the other hand, I have the Spanish DVD of the 1953 Universal film The Mississippi Gambler -- made by Universal, not a bootleg -- and it's a pretty poor transfer. You never can tell.

I've even found American films available in the UK but not the US (or sometimes, in their original widescreen formats in the UK while they're not done that way in the US), plus some British films available in the States but not in Britain. The whole business is screwy.
