Her ex wasn't a harden crook, sends the kid to Military School no less.
Another thing why did the major feel the movies were NG? This was 1959 not the 1970s

The mother had full custody. The school couldn't release the boy to the father without her permission. She'd only given permission for her ex-con ex-husband to see their son in the commandant's office.
