sublime ennui and angst

after finishing this remarkable picture, i couldn't help appreciating the degree to which a similar L'Aventurra "mystery" device would have detracted from the fully satisfying "drive" of the leads to wake up and smell Life's Vin Santo!

i was riveted with the cinematography's light and long-take "space" that recalled the silence between notes of Miles Davis. at once, i found myself wanting to shake the leads into a double espresso awakening while also savoring the journey they explore toward ultimately appreciating each other's love and humanity.

sublime ennui and angst

ABSOLUTELY THE BEST WAY TO SUM IT UP, pathepix! These were the very words on my mind as I watched this marvelous symphony in black and white.

I've always appreciated GIANNI DE VENANZO's cinematography, but here, it's superlative -- just superb.

As usual for ANTONIONI, the protagonists are at a remove from others and each other, alienated in the great city, unable to connect their inner self.

A masterpiece.

the entire film got to me but especially the endings embrace, I was just .... *SIGH*. The films had spectacular photography, just the way DI VENANZO captured the emotion and the women, everything from their faces to their movement. I just love this film.

Well-said!

Jeanne Moreau embodied, in your words, "sublime ennui and angst." Just brilliant. So few actors actually have that kind of depth and can pull it off.

This is a beautiful thread, absolutely the words I would have written! Jeanne Moreau is such a beautiful, elegant actress, with such depth. All of the actors and acresses were just superb. Marcello, Monica, just a perfect cool sixties film. They don't make films like this anymore...

Moreau's performance was so moving in this film. You could just feel how alienated she felt throughout the whole film. She was a lost soul searching for something that she could never find.
