La Notte, L' Elisse or L' Avventura, which one is better?

So I purchased La Notte on amazon.com before I ever watched it. I saw that it was very well spoken about by critics on The Documentary film Z Channel (which I recommend to anyone, especially if you're into older films) so it interested me and I bought it.

It took me the second time I saw it to really appreciate it. It was slow moving and wasn't packed with excitement but It was a great film.

Im planning on buying more films by the director of La Notte so to get to the point. Which one of the three (La Notte, L' Elisse, L' Avventura)is better?

By the way, if there is a movie that he has done that is not on the three I pointed out let me know also. But if you seen the three I mentioned let me know which one you preferred.

Thanks

I just finished watching L' Avventura and L' Elisse, and thought that they were absolutely remarkable! Like you said, they are slow-moving, but the whole point of the movie are Anotnioni's references to the built and natural environments. I just bought La Notte (only DVD available here), so I'll know, which one of the 3 is better. So far, I can't decide....

Em I personally prefer L'Elisse to L'avventura and La notte. However they are all simply remarkable films, i would also recommend checking out Red dessert by Antonioni also which i'm still blown away by today. Blow up is also well worth a look although it has dated - a lot - and 'the passenger' still has a special place in my heart even though its nowhere near as good as the aforementioned titles.

Hope this helps.

I've seen L'Avventura and Blowup thus far from Antonioni, and I must say I prefer the latter, though the former is terrific as well. I can't wait to see La Notte which should be arriving soon via Blockbuster!

I would echo some previous posts and definitely go with, of the trilogy, L'Eclisse. Monica Vitti is absolutely stunning.

La Notte is, in my opnion, the weaker of the 3. I think L'Avventura is more exciting in terms of atmosphere, and L'Eclisse is the most clinical visually, and it also has the best ending of any black and white film ever.

I think La Notte is the best of the three by far. It's a far deeper film that's nuanced with the complexities and anxieties of our real lives. L'Avventura and L'Elisse, compared to La Notte, feel like films that are made for the sake of creating meaning through film, rather than creating film through meaning.

Finally saw the whole trilogy, and I'd rate all of the Antonioni's I've seen like this:

[1] L'Eclisse- 10/10
[2] La Notte- 10/10
[3] Blowup- 10/10
[4] L'Avventura- 9.5/10

I've only rated 21 total films a 10 out of 10 before, so I must say Antonioni is my favorite director.

My favorite is L'Eclisse.

My personal favorite is L' Eclisse, because Antonioni really pushes cinema language forward in this one, he almost forgets about a traditional story and concentrates on creating moods and feelings simply with images, and yes the ending is really striking.

I found La Notte the least interesting of the three. I'd go

L'Aventurra
L'Eclispse

then La Notte
of the trilogy but I would put Blow Up, the Red Desert and The Passenger (with Jack Nicholson ) ahead of La Notte.

I think I like La Notte the best of the three, although they all have huge rewards for patient viewers who don't mind having their movies end with a question mark! I simply think Jeanne Moreau is a work of art, and I love the extended party scene, much of which is just totally surreal. Remember the jazz band still playing in the rain after the sun has come up? Fellini is often noted for the unforgettable faces that he found to use in his movies -- almost as memorable as the people in Diane Arbus photographs. I think Antonioni was just as gifted. There are so many people Giovanni and Lidia encounter at the party whose faces are hard to forget. I really need to see it again -- even though I've seen all of them in the last six weeks. But that party scene, and the way Lidia seems to be floating above it, observing while at the same time lost in her own thoughts, is what will always stay with me.

Of the alienation trilogy, my favorite is "L'eclisse," influenced by is showcasing a young Alain Delon.

For me, the best Antonioni film is "Blow-Up."

L'Avventura is the most interesting.

Monica Vitti is the hottest in La Notte.

L'Eclisse is my favorite of the three, though my favorite of any of his movies that I've seen is probably The Passenger.

I instinctively never read the last line of someone's post because I think it's a stupid signature.

L'Avventura i think.
