Capucine

why do prints of this movie airbrush or cut part of the bath scene?

under rated movie, i think. at least an 8.

So you, too, remember that her nipples showed briefly?

reply

yep! (from 1960). i still think one of JW's best movies; fun, the way movies should be.

A memorable scene !!

I had never seen this movie until it was on TCM about a month ago. Capucine is very beautiful. THe bathtub scene...wow. no nipples though, TCM. She is magnificent. The whole plot with the little brother trying to woo her was hilarious. I enjoyed the movie alot, and I will remember it solely because of the gorgeous Capucine.

Hi there, finally got around to watching this film. The dvd is a UK version. I guess it has the scene you have all mentioned. As Angel is taking her bath, being serenaded by Billy, she sponges herself with water. As the water pours down, you briefly, oh so breifly see her right nipple. First a very brief glimpse as she pours the water over her breast. Then a longer brief glimpse as she pours more water onto her shoulder. The scene was shot at least 2 times. Using frame by frame advance: 1. Briefly seen right nipple. 2. As the dog jumps into the water, she moves up and around the bath. At this point you see she has on a flesh colored bra. If not for the bra, you probably would have seen both nipples straight on.

Would be nice to know if you try this frame by frame advance on your dvd copy, ?, to see if both scenes are as I described. Or is Angel wearing a flesh colored bra throughout the whole complete scene. Then this would explain an American and an European version. Funny to have an European version for such a brief scene.

All I remember is that I saw some nipple when the movie played at a West Texas drive-in theater in the early '60s (when I was just beginning to feel the hormone levels rising) but did not see it whenever the movie showed on TV. I wonder how it made it past the censors back then, even though it is a very short scene--after all Capucine in a bathtub IS something one would pay close attention to. No?!

reply

Well that really is something to think about. Could they have had one print for drive-ins and for regular cinemas? I do not know too much about drive-ins, since they are chiefly an American thing. Since when I lived in the states, the only ones I ever saw were all but run down and closed, this being the 80`s. I have never heard of one in England or Germany.

Anyway, that is the great thing about dvd`s and the frame by frame feature. That is why I was wondering about this scene being shot 2 times. As she moves around the bathtub with the dog, you do see more of her breasts. So the flesh colored bra had to be used.

And yes Capucine in a bathtub IS something one would pay close attention to.

awfully good looking gal under any circumstances!

Her nipple on a drive-in screen? It must have been HUGE!!!

Funny thread.

Step on it! And don't spare the atoms!

maybe current general public dvd's in this country have been airbrushed to get a "G" rating to increase profitability. I think wal-mart is notorious for "censoring" movies.

reply

I've also never heard of airbrushing to get a G rating- can you give some examples of that? I don't think there are any. Movies are sometimes airbrushed to be shown on tv, of course but that is different than selling DVDs. On the other point, the distributor sometimes makes 2 versions of DVD (rated version released in theaters and unrated). When a store decides it will buy and resell one version and not the other, that isn't "censorship." No one stopped the artists, distributor, etc. from making and marketing the version(s) they wanted. If a retailer chooses not to buy it, or chooses to buy only the rated version shown in theaters, that isn't censorship; it is their prerogative to buy and resell what they want. No one can tell a private business what to sell in their stores (at least until the government takes over the stores). You may want to check your information.

I have the general release DVD From Fox. I've reviewed this bath sequence several times, using the frame by frame advance.

I don't think Capucine's nipples are shown. I believe she wears a flesh colored demi bra throughout (it is clearly visible right after the dog jumps into the tub) which covers the bottom half of her breasts. At times there are glimpses of only the very top of the bra. It looks like it might be her nipple but it's the bra.

I don't think the filmmakers would have dared to try to film this scene with her topless. Remember this was 1960.

Anyone on this thread admit to being envious of Clancy?🐭

reply

Did anyone notice Capucine seemed like she genuinely enjoyed making this movie? It looked as though she had a lot of fun. Hard to believe 30 years later she would jump to her death. She was so beautiful. What a tragic waste!

reply

I used to think it was a nip slip, but I just saw the movie in HD on my big giant tv, and it is definitely not her nipple that is seen. It is, without any doubt, the edge seam of a garment of some kind she is wearing that covers her breasts. It was not supposed to be seen, because she is in the bath and supposedly naked, but it accidentally appears for a second or less. Believe me, I'm as disappointed as any other straight guy, but it is with total certainty not her nipple.
