I believe the song you are refering to is "Teri Mehfil Mein Kismat Aazmakar". One term I found is "jugalbandhi". I am not sure whether the song in question in specifically a "jugalbandhi" but the article on wikipedia gives a description very close to what was witnessed when watching the movie.
Hopefully this is the term you are searching for. I too loved the translation "Melodic Debate". If the world just had more of these debates...who would need war? :)
