Jimmy Stewart on the set

My dad owned Challis Contracting and was contracted to set the explosives for the big scene in the canyon. We lived on the set in a camper for several weeks. Besides the big scene with all of the explosions, several scenes were shot along the river. I was 9 yrs old at the time and befriended a tall slender gentleman who always ate his lunch alone while reading his book. His uniform told me he was the security guard. Every day at lunch, I would take him by the hand and show him my bottle cap collection that was neatly lined up on a picnic table, separated by color and language. (We were very near the US/Mexico border) Then we would go down to the river's edge and I would show him my watermelon plant and we would marvel at the rapid growth of the melon. He was my friend. Later when the movie released, we went to an indoor theater in Tucson to see it. Suddenly, there was my friend Jimmy the guard on the big screen! In a loud whisper I declared, "Look Daddy, they let my friend Jimmy the guard be in the movie!" I was so happy for him! Daddy explained that he was Jimmy Stewart the actor, not a guard. Apparently I had been interrupting him from studying his lines every day at lunch. But he was such a kind and gentle soul that he happily played along with my enthusiasm. I never met him again, but cherish our summer friendship on the set of The Mountain Road.

Thanks for sharing it with us too !!

What a sweet anecdote. Thank you so much for sharing.

And it is nice to know that the Stewart persona on-screen, was so very much, like the real man.

I can easily picture him being just as you described. Thank you again.

Jimmy came to the National Film Theatre in London in the spring of '72 to publicise his movie The Dynamite Man From Glory Jail. Several of us were allowed to ask him one question about his movies. I asked about The Man from Laramie, one of my favourite westerns. Jimmy was everything you ever heard about him - kind, thoughtful, polite to everyone and a true gentleman. To speak to such a great actor was a rare treat and a total delight.

What a great remembrance.

It really is nice to hear that Jimmy Stewart's on-screen person really seemed to fit the man.

I also think I'll need to check out 'The Man from Laramie'. Sounds like a good movie.
