if you've never read about or seen some of the examples of "spiritual devotion" people in a land so far removed (not just in topography, but in time) from our own more materialistic/comfortable culture are capable of, then you can't believe that any man could.
i understand what his character's about, though; and, to sellers' credit, he's always 'played indian' very well. it's also important to remember that, ultimately, he does cave in to her. it just takes it a little longer than it would for, say, your average randy westerner. :-)
(also, in case you didn't know the 'backstory,' sellers himself fell in love with loren - as all her leading men did - even confessing it to his wife at the time...while loren was soon to become carlo ponti's wife). so, obviously it didn't take sellers, the man, more than "two seconds"...
