I saw this movie for the first time today since I was about 10. Very much scarier this time. That voice is insanely freaky. Does anyone know who does that voice? And does it remind anyone else of Dr. Strangelove's voice?

Yeah I just watched this movie last night on TCM and I've been wanting to know who's voice it was ever since. That voice is crazy! When I first heard it I was kinda laughing but then after a while I was like geezzz that's kinda scary!

The first time I saw this movie was when I was maybe twelve and the voice frightened me more than you can possibly imagine.
shareMe too, i saw this when i was very young and that voice was just incredibly creepy, never forgot it. When watching this very late at night it remains a very creepy film.
shareMy younger sister and i watched this movie when we were preteens, and were SO freaked out by that voice. When we went to bed, we had to walk up the dark stairs handinhand! Every once in a while we still say to each other "We had an appointment, Mrs. Preston..." and laugh...then shudder...
shareLet me throw my hat in here too. As a pre-teen too I only saw the previews yet for YEARS after, that was the scariest movie experience I ever had. Yep, it was that creepy voice on the phone that did it and the fact that Doris was alone listening too it. Well done!
shareMe too! I was 12 or 13 the first time I saw this at my cousin's house, and my sister and I had to stay up late with the lights on playing 20 questions because we were too scared to go to sleep!
I will say, though, watching this 10 years later and expecting the voice, it didn't scare me as much. But still a little. ;)

My guess is that the voice is Rex Harrison putting on a creepily high-pitched tone. After all, he is the instigator of the plot to kill his wife. However, it's only a guess, but it could well be Rex putting on a convincingly disguised voice. Anyone know for sure?
shareI always wanted to see if they did, in fact, use Harrison's voice for the recording; you CAN test if it was. You do this, by getting a recorder that has a pitch control. Play an audio of something from Rex H. while speeding it up a bit. But I doubt if they used Rex Harrison's voice for that.
shareI always thought it sounded a lot like Roddy Mcdowell's voice and have long suspected they used him to do it to throw our suspicions further onto his character in the plot.
And Darkness and Decay and the Red Death held illimitable dominion over all.
It's a guess, but I think the voice belongs to Ben Wright. One credit you will remember is as the Nazi in Sound of Music, but he got a lot of work in the US in smaller roles and did voice overs and dubbing where a genuine English accent was required -IMDB lists his credits.
shareIt didn't really sound like Tony or Peggy could have done it. That means there must have been another person involved in the crime, making the telephone calls. Peggy could have used the tape recorder to make the calls, except there was that time Aunt Bea answered and the voice said something different because he could tell it wasn't Kit. Tony mush have hired someone to do the voice for the tape recorder and the phone calls.
