I agree with the OP. One of my all-time favorite characters.

Absolutely, with his taciturn stare, black outfit, vague accent, and lighting reflexes definitely my favorite western character a true man of mystery.

I couldn't help but keep thinking that he was a robot, in fact I had to remind myself that he wasn't. :-)

Brynner and all the guys except Buchholz were extraordinarily cool. Nobody in movies today comes close. Coolness on that level is a thing of the past.

The character shouldn't have been cool, as he was basically a Samurai transposed to the Old West without any attempt to explain his shaven head or Bhuddist attitudes.

But Yul Brynner MADE the character cool! And somehow, believable.
