There are supposed to be 40 gang members. But you can't tell how many were killed in the first fight.And no one gives a count. In the second fight,it looks like The Seven are dropping the gang like flies. But more gang members keep on popping up,until the Mexicans finally kill them all.
shareI think they claim 40 gang members to make it impossible to count. That's one of the several reasons that Seven Samurai is the better movie. The plot actually makes sense in a 17th Century Japanese setting. It's grossly unrealistic in a 19th century western American / Mexico border town setting.

I just watched this for the first time last night. There was a scene where Calvera is counting off those killed in the first ambush. Like "George at the wall, Bill on his horse"...like that. I'm pretty sure the count was 11 out of the 40.
