Gabriel Figueroa is God

Sure, Gavaldón's drection is top-notch and López Tarso, Pellicer and Enrique Lucero give remarkable performances....

but Figueroa's photography is breathtaking... I would use stills from this movie as paintings.

He truly was one of the most underrated cinematographers!

I wouldn't call Gabriel Figueroa an "underrated cinematographer", after all the man won everything, from La palme d'or at Cannes for his work in "María Candelaria" and for "Los tres mosqueteros"; the Golden Globe for "La perla"; thanks to his work in "The Night of the Iguana" he received an Oscar nod for best cinematography. In addition he won a bunch of other international awards plus half a dozen of "Arieles" (the equivalent to the Oscar awards in Mexico).

Those who knows something about cinematography knows who was Gabriel Figueroa and his amazing body of work. He's recognized by other DP's as one of the best B&W DP's ever. "The master of chiaroscuro".
So he isn't exactly "underrated". However, truth is he remains "unknown" for the average moviegoer, especially for those unfamiliar with the work of Emilio Fernández, Luis Buñuel and mexican cinema in general terms.
