Has anyone bought the new uk r2 dvd?

I`ve got this on an old HMV dvd boxset but was wondering as to the quality of the new dvd.Is it in 1.66:1 widescreen?

reply

Just ordered. Will let you know the quality and aspect ratio.

Visited a couple of sites. Say dvd is 4:3. I assume it was origianally 1.66:1.
IMBD doesn't say.

reply

Yes the opening and end credits on my boxset are framed at what looks like 1:66:1-rest of the film is in 4/3-not a major disaster but would be nice if they got it right.

Just recieved. My oppo upcoverting dvd player makes whirring sound on the menu and during the credits. Sound goes away during film. Yes, its 1:33-1 aspect ratio except for the titles. I played on my 32 inch analog and it looked pretty good (7-10)I'll try it tonite on my 720p projector to an 84 inch screen and let you know how it looks.
Yes, I'm disapponted about the aspect ratio. One would hope that the reason is the lack of availability of a quality 1:66-1 print. Although I find it odd that any source film print would not be in the original aspect ratio, especially such a common aspect ratio.
I don't imagine it hurts this film as much as it would others. Most of the scenes are relatively static.
In the unlikely event that this film is ever restored, given the Criterion treatment or mastered in HD, it'll be interresting to see how it looks.

Have you seen a film called "Yesterday`s Enemy"(1959)with Stanley Baker?Similar idea and just as good if not better!Try ebay.co.uk for a copy as it`s never had a commercial release on any format-criminal!

reply

No, I haven't seen it although I love Stanley Baker (very underatted). Although I am American, I love English films. Laurence Harvey (actually not English but Lithuanian) has been my favorite actor ever since I saw The Manchurian Candidate almost 30 years ago. You might want to check out Expresso Bongo, it puts the lie to anyone who saw Harvey as a wooden actor. The Bongo DVD that's out, however, maddenenly deletes several songs. I'll look for "Yesterday's Enemy". Thanks for the recommendation.

Many of Baker`s early films just aren`t available on dvd but some others to look out for are "Prize Of Arms",which although not a war film,is a superbly gritty heist pic as Baker & co dress up as M.P`s to pinch an Army payroll."Helldrivers" is a tough little film about corruption in the road-haulage business and contains an amazing cast of actors-many at the beginning of their careers:Sean Connery,Jill Ireland,Patrick Mcgoohan,David Mccallum as well as Herbert Lom,William Hartnell(Ist Dr Who),Sid James(probably unknown in the States but much loved in the UK-he was actually best friends with Laurence Harvey until they had an argument during filmimg of "The Silent Enemy")and of course Stanley Baker in another terrific performance.

Just watched LST on my Mitsubishi projector onto a 84" screen. Picure was well above average, significantly better than my analog tv. At least an 8/10. What I noticed (I've had a VHS off air recording for over 25 years) was how wel the lighting captured the sense of the heat of the jungle. Picture was quite clear.
Much better than the DVD prints I have of Silent Enemy and I am a Camera which I believe were issued by discount DVD companies.
